A Look at My Experience
When I signed up for the NTM International Docent Training Program in the summer of 2020, I didn’t realize just how much it would shape my understanding of Taiwan—or how it would refine my skills for the future. The world was in the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic, and international travel was at a standstill. Like many others, I found myself longing for meaningful ways to connect with the world outside our little island. The program offered just that, albeit in a form I hadn’t expected.
With the number of international tourists almost non-existent, the program had to pivot. Along with preparing us in guiding tourists through the walls of Taiwan’s oldest museum, we also focused on something entirely different: digital engagement. We learned how to bring the museum to life for an online audience. Under the guidance of professionals, we delved into the art of creating Instagram Reels and running effective social media campaigns. It was a crash course in digital storytelling, and it taught me not just how to communicate history, but how to make it resonate with people across the globe, even when they couldn’t be there in person.
I remember the excitement of brainstorming content ideas with my fellow participants, each of us drawing on our own cultural backgrounds and perspectives to create something unique, united by our common passion for history and our desire to share it with others. The friendships I made during this time were invaluable—bonds formed over late-night Zoom calls, but also over our mutual love for Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage.
Tourists Are Back!
Today, Taiwan’s tourism industry is back in full swing, and the NTM International Docent Training Program promises an unforgettable experience for its participants.
