Historical Origins
The Chinese character 女 originated as a pictogram , which visually represented a woman. In its earliest form, the character depicted a woman with breasts, either kneeling or standing. Over time, the modern form of the character evolved, with the shape being turned to the left. The enclosed area on the left side of the character is considered to be a remnant of the left breast (the woman’s right), while the right breast was eventually omitted.
