According to the latest available data from Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency, there are 10,626 US citizens living in Taiwan as of July 2023. This figure includes both expatriates employed by American or Taiwanese companies, students, as well as those who have chosen to retire or start a new life on the island.

Why Are Americans Moving to Taiwan?

One of the primary reasons why Americans are attracted to Taiwan is the country’s dynamic economy. Taiwan is home to many major technology companies, including TSMC, Acer, and Asus, which offer abundant opportunities for Americans with expertise in fields such as engineering, software development, and marketing. The presence of a highly skilled workforce further contributes to the appeal of Taiwan as a career destination.

Another factor that draws Americans to Taiwan is the country’s high standard of living. With its excellent healthcare system, low crime rates, and world-class education system, Taiwan is an ideal place to raise a family or pursue higher education. Additionally, the relatively low cost of living in Taiwan makes it an attractive option for retirees looking to maximize their retirement savings.

In addition to these economic and lifestyle factors, many Americans are drawn to Taiwan because of its unique culture and welcoming people. Taiwan boasts a rich history and traditions, which are reflected in its architecture, art, and cuisine. The people of Taiwan are known for their hospitality and friendly nature, creating an environment where expats can quickly feel at home.

While the number of Americans living in Taiwan may be smaller compared to other popular expat destinations like Thailand or Mexico, Taiwan offers a unique and attractive option for those seeking adventure, career opportunities, and a high standard of living in East Asia. With its dynamic economy, rich culture, and welcoming people, it’s no surprise that an increasing number of Americans are choosing to make Taiwan their home.

    1. This number refers specifically to individuals only holding American citizenship. Individuals holding Taiwanese citizenship, even if they also possess dual citizenship with another country, would not be classified as foreigners.

  2. As a U.S. citizen, living in South Asia for nearly 20 years, mostly in Taiwan…It’s the Taiwanese people that attracted me. Their work ethic, acceptance of foreigners, are only the start. Mostly, it’s their love of freedom and independence that reminds me of home, but keeps me here.
