Historical Origins

The character 家 is a very old character dating back to the oracle bone script. Originally, it was a phono-semantic character with the semantic part 宀 (“roof”) and the phonetic part 𢑓 (“male pig” – pronounced ㄐㄧㄚ / Jiā). However, with time, the phonetic component has been corrupted to 豕.
